CHAPTER I
THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER
âWell, here we are!â
It had been a long journey by plane, steamer and train from the heart of India to the land of the burros and sombreros, Mexico. For hours, it seemed, the sturdy little Mexican engine had toiled across a country as flat and dreary as the desert, marked by a monotonous, unbroken string of telephone and telegraph poles, their cross-arms extending ahead into the hazy horizon, like wooden fingers pointing the way. No vegetation was visible excepting the prickly pear, cactus and feather duster palms in sections of the land where rain seldom falls, sometimes not for years. Clouds of dust had rolled in the wake of the train and churned in the windows, causing members of the exploring party headed by Professor Oakwood, Rex Carter and their two adventurous sons, Dick Oakwood and Dan Carter, no end of discomfort. Ray Carter, Danâs attractive and courageous sister, had borne the last stages of the trip more cheerfully than the men, looking cool and agreeable in her light cotton dress which afforded her relief from the intense heat which also pervaded the coach.
âAnd am I glad weâre here?â rejoined Dan Carter, in answer to Dickâs comment. âBoy, Iâve been where itâs hot before but this terribly dry atmosphere plus the rays from old Sol are enough to drive a guy loco.â
âWhat did you say about rays?â kidded Ray.
âThatâs it!â cried Dan, grinning. âMy sisterâs to blame for this! Iâve been sitting next to a Ray the whole trip. No wonder Iâm burning up!â
Professor Oakwood and Rex Carter smiled as they commenced gathering their pieces of luggage together. They enjoyed the spirit of camaraderie which prevailed among their young people who, through long and exciting associations had grown to know each othersâ thoughts almost before they were spoken. No three persons could have gotten along better. Dick had said that he knew, if Ray had been a boy, he couldnât have maintained a friendship with two brothers like Dan. One was just enough! ⦠In retaliation, Dan had said it was a good thing Dick had no sister since he couldnât have stood another girl like Ray and it was difficult enough to abide with Dick! But these sallies had all been made in the spirit of fun, although it was readily admitted that Ray did form a fine balance between the two young men in the party.
âDonât forget anything!â warned Professor Oakwood, as he glanced about, with the train pulling into the station.
âYou should remind us of that!â laughed Dick. âWhy, Dad, youâve lived up to all the traditions of the absent-minded professor. And hereâs a camera you were going to leave behind this minute!â
Dick picked up the object which had slid down in a corner of the seat.
âUpon my word!â exclaimed the Professor.
